1. Spain is full of the most stunning people I have ever seen. Men. Women. Old people. Children. Everyone. They are all just gorgeous.
2. Obesity doesn't exist in Spain.
3. The Spanish love to dance. And can dance until the sun rises. No joke.
4. Spain is hot. We're talking like going outside and instantly sweating hot. The nights are gorgeous though. It's not even worth it to do your hair though because it's just going to get sweaty and gross.
5. The Spanish love to wash their streets at night. They simply just power wash the streets to make them sparkling and clean.
6. So far I've learned: Shots- Chupitos, Wait- Espera, Excuse me- Perdon/disculpe. All of the necessary words to live in Spain.
Yesterday was amazing. I woke up at 12:30 like a Spaniard (or maybe it was just the jetlag.) The three of us then headed to a pool where for 10 euros we got a towel, 2 free drinks, and a lounge chair for the day. Back to the beautiful people-- our life guard looked like Victoria Beckham; dress and all. Seriously the most stylish life guard I have ever seen. Two free drinks later and lots of swimming and sun, we headed back to our apartment around 7:30. Next, we got ready and headed out for la cena (dinner) just like the Spanish. Yes, dinner here is at 10:00pm. Our apartment is right near the Catedral, so we headed in that direction and chose a place right in front of it. The Catedral is gorgeous at night when it is all lit up. We ate a rousing meal outside near the sights and watched people.
SIDENOTE: Whoever told me that the Spanish don't wear heels/wedges/shorts is an idiot. I left all of my stuff at home thinking I would never wear it and low and behold the Spanish women wear it ALL of the time!! Guess that gives me a reason to go shopping.
Back to la cena.... my current roommate Mary and I ordered Tapas Sorpresa (Tapas Surprise). It came with five random tapas (squid in a tomato based sauce, chicken in a lemon sauce, mystery meat, the Spanish version of potato salad, and octopus salad.) I tried everything except the mystery meat which I later learned was kidneys. A sangria pitcher later, we were off to meet up with other people part of the Teach in Spain program who are currently in Sevilla partaking in the four week immersion program. (I'm in the two week one.) In the middle of Sevilla is a giant sculpture that looks like a giant waffle but the Spanish consider it a giant mushroom. It is massive! This was where we met up with the CIEE people. We hung out for a little bit and got to know some of the people while drinking cervesas. Next, we headed to a discoteca (club) called Alfonso for some Spanish dancing. IT WAS AMAZING. It was everything I could have wanted with a night of dancing. They played the best Spanish music and even threw in some American music! Again, I can't get over how much fun it was. Fun Fact--- there are no smoking regulations in Spain. So people were smoking while dancing. Not sure how that is safe but whatever. Also, I must repeat the fact that people are gorgeous here. The bartenders don't even get tips and yet they were dressed flawlessly. Around 5:00 am we headed home. This is normal for the Spanish which is still insane, and I think my body might hate me for it.
Anyway, so today we woke up around 1:00 pm. Again, this is the Spanish lifestyle; not just me being lazy. We headed to the Catedral and spent two hours walking around the inside. It was HUGE inside! The biggest church I have ever seen. And Cristofer Columbus' tomb is kept here. We also walked to the top of the giralda (tower) which is comparable to 35 flights of stairs. Except, there are basically zero stairs-- it is just ramps going around in a circle like a spiral staircase minus the stairs. At the top, we were able to see the entire city! It was breathtaking! After the tour of the Catedral, we ate at a small restaurant and devoured Cappuccinos and margarita pizza. Yay, coffee fix! Oh, I should also mention that because Spain is so hot, they have water misters going off constantly at the restaurants. So the entire time we were eating outside there, we were being misted which feels amazing in this heat. After talking and drooling over all of the mopeds that are everywhere, we decided to explore the city. AKA we got really lost. But it was gorgeous none the less. The streets are mostly all cobblestone and alleyways with picture perfect buildings and flowers and wrought iron fences and artwork. Sorry, I am really in love with the city. After wandering aimlessly for a while and a lot of dehydration we finally made it back to our apartment which just so happens to be next to a gelato store. So of course to beat dehydration, gelato based smoothies were necessary. Now, it is 9:00pm Spain time which means the night is just beginning and we're going to attempt to go to a Sevilla/Malaga futbol game.
I love this life. Pictures to follow either tonight or tomorrow in the next post! Adios
